Borussia Dortmund, the German team, fell into the trap of defeat against their opponent, Mainz, in a match held on Saturday evening in the 33rd round of the German League. Mainz managed to score three goals in the first half, with Leonardo Martinez opening the scoring in the 12th minute, followed by Lee Gang Song adding the second and third goals in the 19th and 23rd minutes respectively.
Despite Dortmund’s efforts to narrow the gap by introducing some of their star players like Jadon Sancho and Julian Brandt in the second half, Mainz managed to maintain a clean sheet.
As a result of this match, Borussia Dortmund currently holds the fifth position in the German League standings with 60 points, having played 33 matches, winning 17, losing 7, and drawing 9 matches. This position secures their qualification for the Champions League next season, as they are 14 points ahead of Eintracht Frankfurt in sixth place.
On the other hand, Mainz ended their streak of three consecutive draws with this valuable victory, which greatly contributes to their fight against relegation. With this win, Mainz’s points tally increased to 32, placing them in fifteenth position. Even if they lose their last league match next week, they will not be directly relegated. Union Berlin, who is in sixteenth place, is 30 points behind Mainz and will have to compete in a playoff match against the third-ranked team in the second division to determine promotion or relegation.
Dortmund’s lineup for the match consisted of Mayer as the goalkeeper, Bauza, Schlotterbeek, Ozkan, and Süle in defense, Nmecha, Wolff, and Gittins in midfield, and Reus, Malin, and Moukoko in the attack.
